St Johns - University of Canterbury Ministry

Students from the University of Canterbury have long been very welcome members of our church family here at St John’s.  Some come to our 10am meeting at St Margaret’s, probably the majority come to our 7pm meeting at St John’s.  We really value having students with us, likewise students value the encouragement of mature Christians both older and younger than themselves.

On The Campus...

We work on campus in partnership with other Christian groups and churches to promote biblical teaching that is reliable, relevant and enjoyable.  We seek to tell everyone we can of the good news of Jesus Christ.

We work closely with the Christian Union in promoting the LunchtimeBibleTalks.  These are series of public Bible talks on campus that aim to encourage and challenge Christians (or those just interested in finding out more).  They are held on Tuesdays at 1pm in the Study Room of the UCSA building.

Associated with this group are a series of Bible studies that run on and off campus that follow the topics of the public talks.  This gives us a chance to share and discuss how we are responding to the Bible.

What Else Is There...

As well as all this, there are other opportunities:

International Christian Fellowship (ICF) – a group meeting specifically to cater for students from overseas (they meet 5:30pm each Friday at St Hildas in Riccarton)

  • Prayer Meeting - each Tuesday at 12pm in the UCSA Study Room. A chance to pray with other students for the campus

  • TEAMtime (Training in Evangelism and Ministry) – a weekly training group to equip us for a lifetime of Christian service).

  • A week conference in the Easter break (this year was looking at the Cross of Christ; the dates for next year are 23-27 April 2007)

  • A weekend away in September (this year we looked at the letter of 1 Peter)

  • Chances to serve the wider church family – a number of our students teach Sunday School and youth group at the church.

  • And lots more...

Why all of this?

We provide all these opportunities because the Bible shows us that we can't keep going as Christians on our own. Being part of a church family - as well as the campus group - gives you the chance to be taught by, make friends with, encourage and support Christians of all ages and backgrounds.

How can I get involved?
